Street Hawker

Lee Yun Hong

The sculpture describes the life of a street hawker, a common sight in Singapore from the thirties to early eighties. It gives a glimpse of the lives of early immigrants in Singapore, depicted through the “tick-tock man”, who used a bamboo stick to hit a hardwood rod, producing a rhythmic “tick tock tick tock” sound as a way to announce his arrival to his customers. In his baskets, he was selling homemade noodles with fish balls, a local dish that remains popular to this day.
